Actually, the "guys on top" don't maintain their high Arena rank with HB. In reality, those players purchase thousands of Gems to get the best talents and heroes, and stay on par with the current updates. If obtaining HB does take a long time, and you're struggling to rank higher than 70 HB/hr, consider joining an active guild that is capable of beating bosses. That way, you should be able to buff up your HB gain rates.
So the best HB rate I have been able to acheive is 60/hr. I use a non-defensive defense to lose, because I have found with a good defense, the best I could do was a 60/hr, and I couldn't beat the guys I was challenging anymore. My 5 best heroes (Pal, TG, Ninja, Druid, Suc) are 5 star (85-91) then I throw in a 4 star elite. What rank in the arena do I need to get to to the 70, 80, 100 HB? Am I doing this all wrong?

Well, my main Arena Heroes (SM, TG, Druid, Immortep, Cupid, Champ, Reaper, Succubus, Atlanticore) are in the 120+, and I can only make it to around 500s if I try hard. So no, you are doing fine, just keep playing Arena as much as possible during the day :)
Obtaining those heroes is not an option for months. You've got all but 1 of the top heroes. Currently saving my gems to get 20 consectutive rolls to challenge the 1 out of 20 gets you a legendary. I am saving shards @ 200+ per day to get Immortep. That will give me 6 Legendary. Hopefully I can roll a Reaper or AC in my 20 rolls.
What rank in the arena gets you to the 100s?
I've been on the game for 50 days trying to scrap my way up. Luckily my guild has 2 high might guys that carry the load on Boss 2, and I am able to sneak in a 5th place finish with a slash and dash approach with my TG.
I manage to remain in 90-100 HB per hour rankings, and 100 HB level starts at rank 900.
I believe it may have somthing to do with me having a high level Succubus (I got on as my 3rd hero starting out with a luck 500 HB roll on my 3rd day of playing. I hadnt even realised my luck then)
My team now consists of: Lvl 75 Executioner 3/9 with 2/5 Tenacity, Lvl 72 Druid 4/9 with 2/5 Tenacity, Lvl 71 Ninja 3/9 with 1/5 Heavy blow, Lvl 71 Paladin 3/9 with 2/5 Stone Skin, Lvl 74 Succubus 3/9 with 2/5 Deadly Strike, and a Lvl 68 Shaman 3/9 with 3/5 Heavy blow
I send all my high health Heros down one lane to stall the enemy Heroes, and my Ninja/Succubus up another free lane to get at the Shrine early. As soon asn my Succubus can get her first Proc off, Ninja can keep the damage scaling well so the enemy cannot catchup unless they have a Succubus and Pumpkin Duke combo.
You are not doing it wrong.. A no defense in arena is best, so you win all you challenges for 200 hb each time
And sitting at 60hr is just fine.. Not that much diff for 70, and extra 240 a day.. You get that easy if you log in every few hours to run arena..
Have patience you are getting good returns now, and as you grow you will move to 70, 80 hr down the line.. Clashing takes time and patience :)
Also the new trials and challenges give another hb pop now..
Always buy the 1.000 hb a day in the store for 50 gems, with your daily free gems..
And then of course get in a little guild to gain another few thousand on boss fighting every day.. Find a guild that fights the boss daily, but isn't too big so you can get a decent place in rankings on boss for more hb..
As you grow above hero lvl 80, and then 100, your ability to gain hb gets better, and you get more per day etc..
For instance I fight the boss by myself every day , for 3500 hb a day. I was strong enough to do that with lvl 80-90 ish Heros, you need to get several heavy blow abilities on your Heros, and use Tg and champion.. Preferably with heavy blow...
Rank of 1,000 and higher would earn you 100/hour. This is a good spot.
Rank of 300 and higher would get you 110hb/hour. This is fairly hard to achieve and maintain. You would need at least 4/5 revite Aries and very high level for the other 5 heroes. Either that or great luck.
Rank of 100 and higher would start giving you better rates but those are extremely hard to maintain. To get here you would need 5/5 revite Aries at 8/9 skill level and 3/5 sprint crest set, 5/5 revite Warlock, at least a 4/5 revite Cupid, and preferrably 2 additional heroes with 3/5 sprint crest sets and high revite talents. You would also need to play constantly.
